Gobi Challenge 2009 – a personal recommendation In July this year I had the pleasure of undertaking a genuinely first rate adventure in an environment I can only describe as awe-inspiring – the Sandbaggers Gobi Challenge 2008 in Outer Mongolia. The organisers promised an ‘expedition style’ event and they weren’t lying! Arguably the most adventurous Desert Ultra on Earth the event covered over 140 miles of ice gorge, mountain track, desert plain and the highest sand dunes in Asia. Along the route we lived with Mongolian nomadic families enjoying one of the oldest surviving cultures on Earth. Having been involved in the running and ultra scene for many years I can say without hesitation this is the most challenging (on many levels), rewarding and enjoyable ‘adventure’ race I have ever been involved with. I’m planning on a return in 2009 (in a support capacity!) and would encourage anyone seeking to test themselves to get on board. Details are available at www.sand-baggers.com or from the race director Dave Scott at david@sand-baggers.com
Dates for the 2009 event are 31st July to 11th August.

Eagle Isle Ultra 2009 For those of you who fancy something a little closer to home why not have a go at the inaugural Eagle Isle Ultra in September 2009. The course has been set by Phil Briggs and Dave Scott (respectively head of safety and race director of British Ultra) and promises to be a cracker. Over three days competitors will cover in excess of 120km’s of mountain, coast and track as they tackle one of the most testing events in the UK. Following an ‘expedition’ style format this ultra is the perfect opportunity for those of you who want to experience a staged event without having to commit the time and finances which many of the traditional week long events demand. Details going live soon - watch www.eagleisleultra.com for more information

Scottish Ultra 2009 Taking place on the remote Islands on the West Coast of Scotland, the Scottish Ultra will undoubtedly be the toughest multi stage footrace within the United Kingdom. The event will see athletes compete over 6 days taking in high mountains, exposed coastal cliffs, isolated tracks/trails in one of the more remote and certainly most extreme environments that Britain has to offer. www.scottishultra.com
